Trevor Story cautiously opens door to playing again in 2024
Trevor Story’s 2024 season, thought to be over after only eight games, could have a second act.
“We’re having the conversations about it now,” the veteran shortstop told reporters in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon, hours before the Red Sox and Dodgers opened the second half with a three-game set. “It’s too early to say if that’s gonna happen or not, but always in my mind, it’s something that obviously, if there’s a chance to play in the playoffs, this is why I came to Boston.”
Story last played in Anaheim on April 5, when he fractured his left-shoulder glenoid making a diving catch. He underwent what was expected to be season-ending surgery the following week. After rehabbing in California for most of the subsequent months, he rejoined the team in Los Angeles, and will continue his rehab with them moving forward.
“I think we’re being very diligent about the process, we’re being respectful, and we’re not doing anything like that my body’s not saying yes to,” Story clarified. “It’s too early to tell, but obviously it would be amazing if I can.”
Despite losing Story for most, if not all of the season, the Red Sox have emerged as legitimate playoff contenders. They entered the All-Star break 11 games above .500 for the first time since late June 2022, with their 53-42 record ranking fifth in the American League and tied with the Atlanta Braves for eighth in the Majors. They’re a top-5 AL team in doubles, triples, home runs, extra-base hits, average, on-base and slugging percentages, and OPS. Moreover, they hold the third AL Wild Card, and entered Friday just four-and-a-half games out of first in the division.
With the trade deadline less than two weeks away, Story’s revelation only adds to the long list of reasons the Red Sox should be looking to buy and continue their postseason push.
“That’s what I signed for,” he said. “To play in October with the Red Sox.”
