Matt Cowgill of Granite Links earns medalist honors at Massachusetts Amateur
Matt Cowgill of Granite Links Golf Club earned medalists honors at the 116th Massachusetts Amateur Championship.
Cowgill fired rounds of 68 and 67 to finish the two-day stroke portion of the event at 9-under par. That was two shots better than Shvam Bhaumik of Thorny Lea (69-68), who finished 7-under.
Cowgill and Bhaumik were the only two players in the 144-player field to shoot both rounds in the 60s at Framingham Country Club. Now the tournament switches to a match play format. The winner will be crowned Friday.
Tying for third were George Wright members Sean Fitzpatrick (71-68-139) and Joseph Lenane (69-70-139).
New England Patriots punter Bryce Baringer did not make it to match play. He played better Tuesday, finishing with a 74, after a first-round 77.
Defending champion Ryan Downes of GreatHorse barely advanced after rounds of 73 and 73. But Downes is among the 32 golfers who will tee it up Wednesday morning with eyes on advancing.
Impressively, George Wright produced four of the 32 golfers who advanced to match play.
