India June 2024: Toyota, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga break records, Tata Punch back to #1

The new Taisor helps Toyota to a new volume record in India.

New car wholesales in India edge up +3.6% year-on-year in June to 339,418, a new record for the month. The H1 2024 result is up 7.5% to 2,160,575. General elections, severe heat waves and declining orders were balanced with aggressive discounts and new launches to still keep June volumes in positive. A production push has meant wholesales have been significantly higher than retail sales in recent months. Maruti Suzuki (+3.1%) matches the market on its way to 40.4% share vs. 41.6% over FY2023. Hyundai (+0.2%) and Tata (-7.9%) disappoint at 14.8% and 12.8% share respectively. In contrast Mahindra (+22.8%) and most impressively Toyota (+41.2%) skyrocket. The Japanese brand even breaks its monthly volume record at 25,752, eclipsing its previous best of 25,119 established just last March. Kia (+9.8%) is the only additional gainer in market.

Model-wise, the Tata Punch (+66%) scores a third win in the past four months and cements its YTD pole position with over 10,000 units more than the #2, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (-8.8%). The Maruti Suzuki Swift (+2.9%) is bumped down to #2 for the month, followed by the Hyundai Creta (+12.8%), managing its second podium finish this year (#2 in March). The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (+88.8%) breaks its monthly volume record at 15,902. The Maruti Suzuki DZire (+44%), Mahindra Scorpio (+42.3%) and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (+24.5%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10. Among recent launches, the Hyundai Exter is down two spots on May to #20, the Toyota Taisor is up five to #33 and the Honda Elevate up 11 to #37.
