Everett firefighters rescue girl from blaze during mayday, firefighter also injured

A girl was rescued by firefighters from a blaze in Everett after passing DPW workers reportedly spotted smoke and started pounding on residents’ doors.

During the middle of a mayday, firefighters rescued the young child up on the third floor and got her to a nearby ambulance — which brought her to a Boston hospital. One firefighter was also injured during the blaze, and was expected to be OK.

Just before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Everett Fire’s 911 communications center started receiving multiple calls for smoke coming from the roof of a house on the corner of Hancock and Tappan streets. DPW workers driving down the street reportedly saw smoke at 140 Hancock St., and alerted residents by knocking on doors.

Everett firefighters soon after arrived, and a second alarm was struck for the fire.

“With fire now showing from the top floor, companies made a quick entry up to the 3rd floor and a MAYDAY was declared,” Everett Fire wrote.

Firefighters were able to save the girl on the third floor during the mayday.

“Short time later the Mayday was terminated, all firefighters were accounted for and deemed safe,” Everett Fire wrote, adding, “The fire was contained to that one house, and the ‘All-Out’ was sounded just before 12:00.”
