Red Sox activate Romy Gonzalez from IL, option Jamie Westbrook

The Red Sox continue to get healthier, and Monday the club activated utility player Romy Gonzalez from the 10-day injured list.

To clear space on the roster, the club optioned infielder Jamie Westbrook to Triple-A Worcester.

Gonzalez had been on the IL since June 2 with left hamstring tightness and figures to bolster the Red Sox depth in both the infield and outfield. Gonzalez is batting .257 with two stolen bases in 17 games, and he has played defensively at five different positions, primarily shortstop but also first base, third base, right field and designated hitter.

The right-handed hitting Gonzalez will likely pair with the lefty David Hamilton in a platoon at shortstop, with Ceddanne Rafaela an option at the position as well.

Gonzalez likely won’t be the last Red Sox player to come off the IL in the near future. Outfielder Wilyer Abreu and right-hander Chris Martin could both return this week as well, and second baseman Vaughn Grissom and first baseman Triston Casas might not be far behind.

The Red Sox won’t ever be at full strength with Trevor Story, Lucas Giolito and Garrett Whitlock all out for the season, but the club might finally have a chance to work with a full deck of cards for the first time this season.

Gonzalez’s return does mean the end of one of the coolest stories of the season, at least for now.

Westbrook’s long-awaited stint in the majors was brief but memorable. The longtime journeyman debuted in the big leagues on June 2 after 11 seasons in the minors and drew a walk in his first at bat in the ninth inning of a close game against the Detroit Tigers. His first career hit came on June 5 against Atlanta and he hit his first MLB home run on June 6 against the Chicago White Sox. Overall Westbrook batted .222 in 11 games.
