21-title salute: Longmeadow adds to its legacy of winning in Div. 2 final
MARLBORO — Longmeadow had to work triple time to cart home the school’s 21st state title.
Senior captain Brendan Harty’s fourth goal of the game in the third overtime period gave third-seeded Longmeadow (21-2) a wild 11-10 victory over fourth-seeded Marshfield to capture the Division 2 state boys lacrosse championship Saturday morning at Assabet Valley.
Harty, who tied the game at 10 with 1:49 left in regulation, emerged as the hero in overtime with a great individual play. He worked his way past a defender and ripped a shot home from the 8-yard mark to end the marathon contest.
Unlike Longmeadow, which had played in 39 prior state championship contests, Marshfield (19-4) was making its maiden appearance in a state final and certainly played well. Early goals by Graham Schofield and Charlie Carroll staked Marshfield to a 2-0 lead. The Lancers ripped off four straight goals but the Rams weathered the storm got the game even at 6-6 by halftime.
Trailing 8-6 in the third, Marshfield responded with goals from John Giberti and pair from Carroll to regain the lead at 9-8. After a Harty goal, Giberti tallied again to give Marshfield its last lead at 10-9 with 3:30 left.
