Red Sox extra innings: Chris Martin to begin rehab assignment on Saturday

Red Sox right-hander Chris Martin, who was recently placed on the injured list with anxiety, has been feeling better and is expected to begin a rehab assignment on Saturday with the Worcester Red Sox.

“We’ll see how he feels,” manager Alex Cora said. “He’ll pitch and we’ll see how he feels, and we’ll go from there.”

Martin is eligible to come off the 15-day IL on Monday and could return as soon as that evening, when the Red Sox are set to open a three-game series against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

Cora provided several other injury updates pregame Friday as well.

Outfielder Wilyer Abreu (sprained right ankle) is feeling better and has begun taking batting practice. The club hasn’t determined when he’ll begin a rehab assignment. … Infielder Romy Gonzalez (left hamstring strain) began his rehab assignment Thursday and went 1 for 2 with a walk, an RBI and a strikeout in the WooSox 14-1 win over Buffalo. He was back in the WooSox lineup playing first base on Friday. … First baseman Triston Casas (torn cartilage in left rib cage) has not yet begun swinging the bat. … Second baseman Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) has started taking ground balls but isn’t running at full speed. … Top pitching prospect Luis Perales underwent an MRI on his right elbow on Thursday. The club expects to have the results back over the weekend. … First baseman Garrett Cooper has officially been released. Cooper was designated for assignment on Tuesday and is now a free agent.
