Cambridge man, involved in gunfight near Roxbury park last year, arrested again

A 19-year-old Cambridge man, involved in a gunfight near a Roxbury park last year, has been arrested again in connection with a double shooting close to a public field, according to authorities.

Police arrested Machyus Battle on charges of assault and battery by discharge of a firearm and carrying a firearm without a license, among a slew of others, for his alleged involvement in a shooting at Donnelly Field the night of May 23.

A Cambridge District Court judge ordered Battle held without bail Thursday, pending a final dangerousness hearing set for Tuesday. Thursday’s appearance came after an arraignment on Monday.

Battle is the second suspect to be locked up in the case, following the arrest of Yonayvi Cruceta, 23, of Cambridge.

Cambridge Police responded to the Berkshire Street field for reports of multiple gunshots at about 9:39 p.m., on May 23.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that Cruceta was at the basketball court at the same time as another group of people when an alleged argument occurred between Battle and Cruceta,” Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow stated in a release.

“Following a brief interaction, an exchange of gunfire occurred between Battle and Cruceta,” they added.

Cruceta and a 22-year-old female suffered gunshot wounds, with the latter believed to have been struck by a stray bullet, Ryan and Elow said.

Battle faces charges of attempted assault and battery by discharge of a firearm, assault and battery by discharge of a firearm, assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds, and possession of ammunition without an FID Card.

Cruceta faces similar charges.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Cambridge police added extra patrols to the area near Donnelly Field “out of an abundance of caution.” City officials have held community gatherings since to address further safety precautions.

Battle was arrested in May 2023 after allegedly engaging in a gunfight near Ramsay Park on Shawmut Avenue in Roxbury. More than 20 shots were fired in the incident, close to where several children were playing sports.
