The unit leader of the Massachusetts State Police unit that investigated the John O’Keefe trial will continue his testimony today, the 24th day of the Karen Read murder trial.

Lt. Brian Tully, the commander of the MSP detective unit stationed at the Norfolk DA’s office, took the stand at the end of the trial day yesterday, following a lengthy cross-examination and shorter redirect examination of one of his investigators, Trooper Michael Proctor.

Tully provided an overview of the makeup of the MSP, how they conduct homicide investigations and the importance of determinations as to cause of death made by the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. But he also said that he had “admonished,” the word prosecutor Adam Lally chose in his question, Proctor for a series of private texts the trooper sent during the investigation. Tully said he also took the issue up his chain of command.

Proctor, who served as the “case officer” for the O’Keefe homicide had early on in the investigation sent a series of what he has repeatedly admitted to being “inappropriate,” “juvenile and regrettable” comments in texts to his friends and even co-workers about Read during his investigation.

Read, 44, of Mansfield, faces charges of second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter and leaving the scene of a collision causing the death of O’Keefe, her boyfriend and a 16-year Boston Police officer when he died at age 46 in the early hours of Jan. 29, 2022. His body was found in the front yard of 34 Fairview Road in Canton.

The comments include calling her a “babe” and “whack job” as well as more offensive language, including a derogatory word beginning with “c” that refers to women’s genitalia. He also repeatedly made crude remarks about a gastrointestinal condition Read suffers.

Tully in his testimony also went over the beginning stages of his office’s investigation.
