Red Sox OF Tyler O’Neill leaves Friday’s game with apparent knee injury
Red Sox outfielder Tyler O’Neill was removed from Friday’s game against the Chicago White Sox during the third inning due to an apparent knee injury.
O’Neill seemed to be moving gingerly as early as the second inning, and NESN’s cameras showed him rubbing and favoring his right knee during the television broadcast. The issue seemed to persist into the bottom of the third, at which point manager Alex Cora pulled him and moved Rob Refsnyder over to right field.
O’Neill only just came off the injured list on Wednesday after missing about a week and a half due to right knee inflammation. The Red Sox outfielder had been grinding through the issue for much of May but returned to action after receiving a cortisone shot and said at the time he was feeling great.
As of this writing the Red Sox have not announced the specific nature of O’Neill’s latest injury.
When healthy O’Neill has been one of Boston’s top hitters this season and his return helped bring crucial protection to Rafael Devers in the heart of the lineup. So far O’Neill is batting .250 with 11 home runs and an .854 OPS on the season.
