Biden campaign launches Black voter outreach program amid slip in support
It appears that President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign has taken notice of recent polling, which suggests support for his second-term run falling among surveyed Black voters.
Team Biden-Harris, on Wednesday, announced the formation of a new national organizing program called “Black Voters for Biden-Harris” which they say is a deliberate attempt to reach Black voters where they are and communicate the work Biden has done to benefit their communities.
“These voters were instrumental in electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020, paving the way for the Biden-Harris Administration to deliver a record low Black unemployment rate, Black wealth increased by 60%, more Black Americans with health care coverage than ever before, and billions forgiven in student loan debt that disproportionately impacts Black borrowers,” the campaign wrote along with the announcement.
According to the campaign, the new get-out-the-vote effort will launch with fundraisers and events in Philadelphia. Mobilizing the Black vote, they say, will be “critical to defeating Trump’s racist and toxic agenda at the ballot box – again.”
Team Biden-Harris says they’ll spend the summer — and eight figures worth of campaign money — engaging with Black organizations, community groups, and houses of worship in all 50 states.
“Our campaign believes that Black voters deserve to hear from Team Biden-Harris, and they deserve to have their vote earned, not assumed. That’s exactly what we are doing through historic investments in Black media and outreach, creative engagement efforts, culturally competent content and innovative organizing initiatives,” Biden’s team wrote.
According to a New York Times/Siena College poll released earlier this month, registered voters asked to choose between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden in five of six swing states prefer the 45th President over the 46th, and Biden’s troubles in those key electoral contests are especially pronounced among young voters who identify as Black or Hispanic, many of whom lay the blame for violence in the Gaza strip at Biden’s feet.
Biden-Harris 2024 Principal Deputy Campaign Manager Quentin Fulks said the multi-million dollar effort to reach Black voters is proof the campaign isn’t making assumptions.
“This coalition and the newly announced summer outreach and engagement programming serve as the next phase of our campaign’s ongoing historic investments in outreach to the backbone of the Biden-Harris coalition: Black voters. While we are busy putting in the work to earn Black America’s support, Donald Trump continues to show just how ignorant he is. Hosting janky rap concerts doesn’t hide the fact that he lacks the resources and competence to genuinely engage our community,” Fulks said in a statement.
The launch of Black Voters for Biden Harris comes less than a week after Janiyah Thomas, Trump Campaign Black Media Director, slammed Biden for his legislative record and his “history of racist remarks” in response to a Biden campaign ad targeting Black Americans.
“The Biden campaign is panicking because they see that Black voters aren’t buying what Biden is selling, and President Trump is receiving a record high support in the polls from Black voters that we haven’t seen in decades. We must not forget that it was Joe Biden who was a key figure in passing the 1994 Crime Bill, which disproportionately harmed Black communities through harsh sentencing laws and increased incarceration rates,” Thomas said in a statement.
