Reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr.’s season over after torn ACL
“Sorry,” Ronald Acuña Jr. posted on X late Sunday night with broken-heart and sad-face emojis.
The Atlanta Braves outfielder, one of Major League Baseball’s brightest stars and the reigning National League MVP, will miss the remainder of the 2024 season after an MRI revealed a complete tear of the ACL in his left knee.
Acuña will undergo surgery at a date to be determined, his team announced Sunday night.
He left Sunday’s Braves-Pirates game in Pittsburgh during the first inning with what the club initially announced as left knee soreness. However, even without an official diagnosis at the time, Acuña’s reaction indicated a severe injury. His knee buckled, and he screamed as he fell to the grass between second and third base. He remained on the ground for several moments, his face contorted in agony, before finally limping off the field with a trainer.
This is the second time in four years that Acuña has suffered a season-ending ACL injury. He tore his right ACL in 2021, and missed the remainder of that season and part of the following campaign.
The Braves are scheduled to play two games with the Red Sox at Fenway Park next week, on June 4 and 5.
