Division 3 state track: Walpole boys run away with title

BRIDGEWATER — It may have been a banner day Saturday for the Walpole boys track team, as the Timberwolves claimed the D3 state championship.

But coach Corey Coogan was right to correct that statement.

“It’s been a banner year,” Coogan said.

“Cross country won the D2A,” he added. “Indoor won the D3 state championship. We set it as our goal to win this title. For the first time all year, we were the favorites coming into this thing. It was a new position for us. Every test that they passed, they passed this test with flying colors. This team is amazing. Easily the strongest team we’ve had in program history.”

They competed like it the whole way. The Timberwolves finished with 92 points, far outpacing second-place Milton, which had 62.

One of the noteworthy performances for Walpole came in the javelin, as junior Matthew St. Cyr won with a throw of 190-1.

Austin Feener of Walpole took the boys 100 in 11.13, and held a small but distinct lead for most of the race.

“Really, I was just trying to work with the wind,” Feener said. “I know my starts, they were a good part of my race indoor, but outdoor, I’ve been focused on that last part. That’s kind of been my goal all season, to pick up after the 50 mark.”

Walpole also won the 4×800 with Jackson Massey, Luke Zahurak, Declan Cunningham, and Sean Kerin in 8:07.87.

Zakai Perkins of Milton ran a clean final in the boys 110 hurdles. He won in 14.82, the only one to break 15 seconds. The race was basically even for the first 50 meters or so until Perkins pulled away in the latter half.

“I’m not sure (what I attribute my kick to),” Perkins said. “I think, in my head, I’m much more competitive than I realize. So, if there’s anybody near me at about halfway, I really have to turn on the jets and lock in. I’ve been working on my start so I have the lead the entire time.”

Milton also won the 4×100 and 4×400 in a strong finish. Perkins, Ferris Collins, Charlie Heffron, and Jacob Daly took the 4×100, and Luka Juric, Moses Mann, Aidan Crummey, and Miles Fergus made up the 4×400 group.

The Mansfield girls won with a dominant fields performance. The Hornets finished with 96 points, with Reading second with 69.

Katie Garrahy (shot put) and Chloe Guthrie (long jump) both won their events, and more added points showing off the program’s impressive depth.

“It was an all-around effort,” Mansfield coach Carolina DiBiasi said. “We scored in places that … javelin, jumps, discus, shot put. We did a lot of the field events, and then our runners also came through.”

Westfield junior Megan Moran separated herself as the top distance runner in D3. She won the 2-mile, then took Saturday’s mile in 5:08.70. Always in the top group, she fell behind at the start of the bell lap, then kicked in late to earn the win.

“I’m really excited. Last year, technically I was second in the 2-mile and then second in the mile. Definitely something I was really hoping for and working towards all season. It’s exciting for me. I’m happy. Happy to make my team and my parents proud.”

Molly Reilly of Walpole won the girls 100 hurdles in 15.40 seconds. She led throughout in a strong performance.

“I’ve been working on my start a lot, basically,” Reilly said. “I was able to come out of my blocks really fast and keep my form the whole race, right to the end.”
