Sources: Red Sox promote No. 2 pitching prospect to Double-A
One of the Red Sox top pitching prospects is on the move.
Luis Perales, who currently ranks as Boston’s No. 2 pitching prospect according to MLB Pipeline, is being promoted to Double-A Portland, according to multiple Red Sox sources.
The news was first reported by Andrew Parker of Beyond The Monster late Wednesday night.
Perales’ promotion comes on the heels of a dominant start on Tuesday in which he struck out 12 batters over five scoreless innings for High-A Greenville. The 21-year-old right-hander has now posted a 3.42 ERA over 26.1 innings through his first seven starts, with 46 strikeouts against 10 walks.
Originally signed for just $75,000 as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2019, Perales has emerged as one of the organization’s most intriguing pitching talents. Boasting a mid-90s fastball that has touched 99 mph along with an excellent slider, Perales was one of two pitching prospects added to the 40-man roster last winter to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft.
Perales endured a brief setback in April when he missed two weeks due to side soreness, but outside of that he’s been fantastic and will now join fellow top pitching prospect Wikelman Gonzalez in the Portland Sea Dogs rotation.
