Jacoby Brissett shares early impression of Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye

FOXBORO — Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye is already leaning on veteran QB Jacoby Brissett one week after reporting to Gillette Stadium for rookie minicamp.

Brissett, who signed a one-year, $8 million contract in free agency this offseason before the Patriots selected Maye third overall, was asked for his early impressions of the rookie.

“He can make all of the throws. He wants to learn football, and he wants to get better,” Brissett said. “That’s what you want not only in your quarterback but anybody on the team. I’m excited to work with him. He’s 21. I was 22-23, but I remember that when I was following Tom (Brady) around anywhere I can learn. He’s already texting me about plays and ‘how do I think about this’ and cadence and stuff like that. Just like all of the little nuances of being in this position at this level.”

Brissett and Maye already had a connection before they were teammates through Sam Howell, who played with Brissett with the Commanders and Maye at UNC. The three quarterbacks golfed together this offseason.

Brissett is in his second tenure with the Patriots. He was selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft and worked under Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo for one season before being traded to the Colts.

Brissett, Maye, Bailey Zappe and Joe Milton III fill out the Patriots’ quarterback room. Head coach Jerod Mayo said after the draft that Maye isn’t guaranteed the starting role in the offense. Performances in organized team activities practices, training camp and the preseason will dictate who plays under center in Week 1 when the Patriots take on the Bengals in Cincinnati.

We’ll find out Monday, during the Patriots’ first OTAs session, who will take the first snap under center in an actual practice.
