WALPOLE – Following an early-season loss to Milton, Walpole has now rattled off 12 straight wins after a victory against the Bay State Conference opponent at home Wednesday.

The Timberwolves scored just enough thanks to a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to upend the Wildcats, 6-4, at Bird Middle School.

“It feels awesome,” Walpole coach Rachael Sprague said about holding on for the victory. “We always talk about not letting off the gas, especially against a team like (Milton). We knew they were going to put balls in play. We knew they were going to challenge us for seven full innings. So, that was just key that we offensively kept pushing and kept scoring runs.”

The Walpole (15-1) offense got on the board first in the bottom of the third as sophomore Sienna Kreuzer laced an RBI single to center to score senior Susie McAdams from third.

Kreuzer added a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-0 after a bases-loaded walk for junior Caroline Doran pushed the lead to 2-0.

“We’ve been struggling a little bit recently and to be able to see one through nine all contribute today was the big takeaway,” said Sprague. “Some of our kids have been in a little bit of a slump and it’s so nice when everybody can contribute to a win.”

Doran also came up with a crucial throw to third that ended a Milton (13-2) threat in the top of the fourth.

“Our defense has just been so solid this year,” Sprague said. “It keeps us in games, wins us games, and keeps us in tough games too.”

This came after junior Sharlotte Stazinski retired the first nine hitters of the contest with six of those via strikeout.

She then battled through traffic through the final four frames as the Wildcats cut the deficit to 4-1 as senior captain Christina McA’Nulty drove home junior Sadie Steuterman in the sixth.

“(Stazinski) is really our rock out there and she did come out strong,” Sprague said about her starter. “Like last game, they made a lot of contact and we knew that they were going to figure her out again and make a lot of contact. That’s why we needed our defense, but she’s just so tough out there.”

Walpole tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh as a fielder’s choice for Doran and an RBI single to center for Stazinski scored Briella Clinton and Doran, respectively, to push the lead to 6-1.

Milton did not fade in the top of the seventh as it scored three times on three hits, including a two-run triple for Steuterman and an RBI single to left for senior Cara Facey to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Stazinski was able to settle in and retire the final two batters to end the contest. Stazinski went the distance with 13 strikeouts and was able to get out of jams in the fourth, fifth and sixth while limiting damage.
