Red Sox injury updates: Garrett Whitlock expected to only need one rehab start
Garrett Whitlock is scheduled to throw three innings during his upcoming rehab start in Worcester on Wednesday, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he likely won’t need any additional starts before returning to the big league club.
“We feel he’s in a good spot,” Cora said. “We’ll see how this one goes and we’ll go from there, but if everything goes well we’re comfortable with where he’s at.”
Cora also reiterated that Whitlock will return as a starter, and barring any setbacks he will likely return sometime during the upcoming road series against Tampa Bay.
Once Whitlock returns the Red Sox pitching staff will be as close to full strength as it’s been since the first week of the season. The club will have its full Opening Day starting rotation of Brayan Bello, Nick Pivetta, Kutter Crawford, Tanner Houck and Whitlock for the first time since early April along with most of the bullpen.
One of the few exceptions is right-hander Isaiah Campbell (right shoulder impingement), who threw a two-inning bullpen on Monday and is expected to face live hitters later this week. Fellow right-hander Bryan Mata (right hamstring strain) also made a rehab appearance in Fort Myers on Monday, throwing two innings while allowing one run on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
