Red Sox injury updates: Garrett Whitlock to make rehab start Wednesday
Garrett Whitlock will make a rehab start in Worcester on Wednesday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed Saturday, and if all goes well the right-hander could return to the big league rotation soon afterwards.
Whitlock has been on the injured list since April 17 with a left oblique strain, but prior to his injury the 27-year-old had gotten off to an excellent start. Whitlock posted a 1.96 ERA over 18.1 innings through his first four starts, and in his last start he’d thrown four scoreless on just 54 pitches before he was removed from the game with the oblique injury.
Whitlock’s injury proved longer-lasting than originally expected but he has begun ramping up over the past week and threw a live bullpen session prior to Friday’s game at Fenway Park. Whitlock’s start for the WooSox is scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m. against the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, and barring any setbacks he’d be in line to return sometime the following week in Tampa Bay.
In addition, right-hander Isaiah Campbell (right shoulder impingement) also threw a two-inning simulated game on Friday. He has been out since April 12 and Cora said the most likely next step would be a live bullpen session at some point in the coming days.
Brayan Bello (right lat tightness) will be activated off the injured list Sunday and will start the series finale against the Nationals.
