‘Artists of Provincetown’ captures vibrant legacy
Provincetown has embraced artists for more than 100 years, and the coastal haven has bragging rights as America’s oldest continuous artists colony.
Creators come to create, and visitors flock to take in the vibrant art scene. But, as fine art photographer Ron Amato notes, the painters, writers, photographers and sculptors who thrive there are facing the financial squeeze of rising rents. “We don’t know what the future is going to be, how affordable it will be for artists to go there anymore and to stake a claim in Provincetown,” said Amato.
His book “Artists of Provincetown” captures a moment in time with 84 portraits of writers, painters, and other artists in their studios and environs. It’s an homage to the creative spirit that has thrived in Provincetown, and a reminder of the rich legacy at stake.
“Ron Amato: Artists of Provincetown” is on view at The Provincetown Art Association and Museum June 28 to Aug. 18. www.paam.org. “Artists of Provincetown” is available online at www.ronamato.com/artists-of-provincetown-book.
