Red Sox injury updates: Masataka Yoshida to be placed on injured list

The Red Sox plan to place Masataka Yoshida on the 10-day injured list after jamming his left hand in Sunday’s game, Alex Cora told reporters Wednesday afternoon.

An official announcement is expected prior to first pitch, along with other additional roster moves and updates.

Yoshida was still undergoing his MRI on Wednesday while Cora spoke, but the Red Sox manager said his hand was in rough shape and that the need for an IL stint was clear.

“His hand is huge,” Cora said. “Hopefully we know what’s going on and we’ll take care of him, 10 days and he’ll be back.”

Cora provided numerous other injury updates Wednesday as well.

Vaughn Grissom (flu) is feeling better and is expected to travel with the club on its upcoming road trip. The hope is he’ll be ready to make his season debut on Friday in Minnesota. Brayan Bello (right lat tightness) threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and is expected to throw a two-inning simulated game in the coming days. If all goes well Bello will make a rehab start on Tuesday.

Nick Pivetta (right elbow flexor strain) will make a rehab start in Worcester on Thursday. Barring any setbacks he will rejoin the club next week and would be in line to return during next week’s series in Atlanta. Garrett Whitlock (left oblique strain) is playing catch but still not throwing off a mound.

Isaiah Campbell (right shoulder impingement) is feeling better and has been playing long toss. Romy Gonzalez (left wrist sprain) is expected to begin a rehab assignment in the coming days. Garrett Cooper (wrist contusion), who was removed from Tuesday’s game after being hit by a pitch, is fine and available to play Wednesday night.
