Red Sox sign left-handed first baseman, acquire infielder from Mets
The Red Sox made a pair of moves to fortify their bench on Wednesday, signing first baseman Dominic Smith to a major league deal while acquiring infielder Zack Short from the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations.
The Smith signing was first reported by The Boston Globe and was confirmed by a Red Sox source. The club announced the Short trade early Wednesday afternoon.
Smith is a left-handed bat who has seven years of experience in the majors. Last season the 28-year-old batted .254 with 12 home runs and a .692 OPS in 153 games with the Washington Nationals, but this season joined the Tampa Bay Rays on a minor league deal.
He played 29 games with the Rays’ Triple-A affiliate before triggering a May 1 opt out, and now he’s set to form a platoon with the right-handed hitting Garrett Cooper for the Red Sox while starter Triston Casas recovers from his rib injury.
Short, meanwhile, is a 28-year-old utility infielder who has played parts of four big league seasons, most recently with the New York Mets. Short was designated for assignment earlier this week after batting .111 in 10 games, and he has experience playing second base, third base and shortstop at the MLB level.
Short is out of minor league options, so he will join Smith on the big league roster in Boston and effectively replace Pablo Reyes, who the Red Sox designated for assignment earlier this week.
As of this writing the Red Sox have not yet announced the expected series of roster moves ahead of Wednesday’s game, which could potentially include the activation of second baseman Vaughn Grissom, but manager Alex Cora told WEEI’s “Jones and Mego” that Masataka Yoshida will be going on the injured list.
