John Deaton turns to Ron DeSantis’ former New Hampshire campaign aide to head Senate bid
Massachusetts Senate candidate John Deaton is staffing up his campaign, putting at the top of the operation two political operatives who helped support Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ now-defunct presidential bid in New Hampshire, according to an advisor.
Deaton hired as his campaign manager Michael Gorecki, who served as the New Hampshire state director for DeSantis’ presidential campaign, and Tyler Flanigan as deputy campaign manager, who was the state’s field director for Never Back Down, a DeSantis-aligned super PAC.
Gorecki started work Tuesday as the head of the crypto and Mesothelioma attorney’s bid to unseat U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a second-term Democrat from Cambridge who has already gone after Deaton in fundraising emails to supporters. Deaton announced his campaign last week.
Gorecki said he is excited to join Deaton’s “growing campaign for the United States Senate, and the commonwealth deserves a senator who believes its best days lie ahead.”
“John’s life story – overcoming staggering odds and escaping poverty, serving his country in the Marines, and fighting for those with the deck stacked against them – will resonate with Massachusetts voters desperate for a departure from the failed status quo,” he said in a statement to the Herald.
Gorecki spent 2018 to 2022 at State Street and later in 2022, ran the unsuccessful congressional campaign of Karoline Leavitt, a Republican who is now the national press secretary for former President Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential bid.
Gorecki also worked as a campaign manager for a Malden city councilor from 2015 to 2017, as an intern for Massachusetts Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr in 2017, as a field representative for Massachusetts Rep. Donald Wong 2016, and as the regional field director for U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz’s bid for president in 2015 and 2016, according to his online resume.
Gorecki also spent four months in 2015 as an intern for former Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican.
Flanigan was the deputy campaign manager for former Connecticut House Republican Leader Themis Klarides’ U.S. Senate bid against Richard Blumenthal in 2022. Flanigan also spent several months in 2022 trying to get the mayor of Cranston, Rhode Island, Allan Fung, elected to Congress.
Flanigan previously worked in 2015 as “volunteer staff” to Massachusetts Rep. David Vieira, a Falmouth Republican, according to his online resume.
Deaton also hired a scheduler and financial coordinator Pamela Saad, according to Jim Conroy, a former campaign aide to Baker who has been serving as an advisor to Deaton. Saad previously worked as the deputy finance director for Baker and former Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito’s campaigns.
“We are interviewing for other positions as we speak,” Conroy told the Herald.
