Kowalski’s Markets is closing its Eagan grocery store this weekend, leaving no locations of the local chain remaining in the South Metro.

The last day of operations for Kowalski’s in Eagan is Saturday,. Feb. 24, the company announced. The store, at 1646 Diffley Rd., will close at 6 p.m.

Afterward, the closest Kowalski’s location for South Metro residents will be on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, about 11 miles away. The company also has a location in Woodbury, as well as East Metro spots further afield in Oak Park Heights, White Bear Lake and Shoreview. Minus Eagan, Kowalski’s has 10 total locations.

Kowalski’s leaders were not immediately available for comment Friday morning.

In terms of grocery supermarkets, Eagan is still home to a Lunds & Byerlys and several Cub locations, plus Hy-Vee, Trader Joe’s and Aldi.

All Eagan Kowalski’s employees are being offered positions at other stores at their existing pay rate and seniority status, CEO Kris Kowalski-Christiansen said in a statement.

The Eagan location opened in 2008, the year after Kowalski’s closed a short-lived Lakeville location, citing poor sales.

Kowalski’s, which got its start when Jim and Mary Anne Kowalski took over a Red Owl on St. Paul’s Grand Avenue, marked its 40th anniversary last year.
