Vikings re-sign safety Theo Jackson ahead of free agency

After carving out a niche for himself last season, safety Theo Jackson has ensured he will be a part of the Vikings next season.

With a few weeks before to go before free agency, the Vikings announced on Wednesday afternoon they have re-signed Jackson. He would have hit the open market if the Vikings did not offer him a contract.

Originally selected by Tennessee in the 2022 NFL Draft, Jackson ended up on the Titans’ practice squad before being poached by the Vikings.

After playing almost exclusively on special teams in his first season, Jackson proved himself useful to new defensive coordinator Brian Flores. In total, Jackson played 126 snaps on defense for the Vikings this season, posting 21 tackles while also hauling his first career interception.

There’s reason to believe Jackson could see even more playing time next season. The future of longtime safety Harrison Smith is up in the air as he ponders retirement. So too is the future of safety Lewis Cine, the Vikings’ 2022 first-round draft pick who was passed on the depth chart this season.
