Magnolias Restaurant, popular Payne Avenue diner, damaged in late-night fire
A late-night fire Monday caused damage to Magnolias, a restaurant on Payne Avenue on St. Paul’s East Side. The restaurant is closed for now.
The restaurant confirmed the fire on social media at 10 p.m. Monday and, by Tuesday morning, had changed its answering machine to report its closure.
It remains unclear how long the restaurant will remain closed and if or when it will reopen. As of Tuesday morning, the restaurant’s owners could not be reached for further details.
The St. Paul Fire Department also did not return a request for comment on Tuesday morning.
Magnolias, which would celebrate its 40th anniversary this year, is popular for its breakfast, affordable comfort food and year-round Friday fish fry. Its building, on the corner of Payne and Magnolia avenues, was built as a White Castle in the 1930s.
The restaurant’s owners appear to own the building, according to public records.
