Runnin’ for a reason: Lowell police officer to participate in Boston Marathon for Sean Collier Memorial Fund

LOWELL — For the second year in a row, Lowell Police Officer Christine Larocque will run the Boston Marathon in support of the Officer Sean A. Collier Memorial Fund.

Larocque finished last year’s Boston Marathon in four hours and 10 minutes, while raising more than $10,000 for the fund. Larocque has set her sights a little higher this year, aiming to cross the finish line in under four hours, while raising at least $8,000.

The Officer Sean A. Collier Memorial Fund provides grants to local public police departments and nonprofits to support the development and implementation of community programs designed to build connections between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

The fund is named after MIT Police Officer Sean A. Collier, who was killed in the line of duty on April 18, 2013, days after the attack on the Boston Marathon.

The Lowell Police Department said Larocque is the lead swim instructor with the Lowell Police Youth Services Learn to Swim Program, which is primarily funded by the Collier Fund.

“I think they’re a great foundation and they give back a lot to the City of Lowell,” Larocque said in the release. “When I learned that they were doing a Learn to Swim Program I thought it was amazing because I think every child should learn to swim. We’ve had a couple of tragedies since I joined the department so it’s great to see the department is willing to do something about it.”

Larocque, the daughter of the late Deputy Police Superintendent Daniel Larocque, has served the Lowell Police since 2021. She began running a year earlier — as the pandemic began to take hold — in preparation of the Police Academy.

Larocque had finished 5K races and half marathons previously, but the 2023 Boston Marathon was her first marathon.
