Late 3-pointer lifts Lawrence past MVC rival Andover, 57-54

LAWRENCE — Joendy Rosario made sure Lawrence ended its Merrimack Valley Conference slate with a bang.

Rosario hit the go-ahead triple with 20 seconds left while Obbie Luciano scored 23 points to lead No. 14 Lawrence to a thrilling 57-54 win over No. 3 Andover on Friday night at Lawrence High School.

The Lancers (14-5, 9-4) have now defeated the Golden Warriors (13-4, 12-2) in two of their three matchups this season. Lawrence plays in the IAABO 27 Comcast Tournament on Sunday and Monday to close the season.

“Resilient effort by our guys,” said Lawrence coach Jesus Moore. “Andover is really good and for our guys to step up down the stretch – just a great win.”

Andover has already sealed the MVC Large Division crown largely on the heels of wins over Central Catholic, Andover and Lowell.

Andover continued to hold a 54-52 edge with 20 seconds left but that is when Rosario struck. On an under the basket play, the guard came off a screen at the elbow and buried a triple from the corner to give Lawrence a 55-54 lead.

Andover came up empty on an open three-point attempt and the Lancers hit two free throws to seal the win.

“We trust our guys in those spots,” Moore said. “Our guys get after it on defense and once we got the lead, we were able to close it out. Tremendous effort from our guys.”

On the heels of 13 points from Luciano, Lawrence jumped out to a 27-13 lead early in the second quarter. Andover, however, came storming back as sophomore forward Luca Palermo poured in 10 of his 12 first-half points to trim the deficit to 32-27 at the break.

The visitors continued their comeback in the third frame. Freshman Josh Roux buried a pair of triples while the Golden Warriors held Lawrence to just three field goals to even the score at 42 heading into the final stanza.

Roux hit a three-pointer to put Andover up 45-42, but Luciano put home two buckets around a Joan Vidal layup to give Lawrence a 50-49 edge with 2:17 left.
