Wednesday’s high school roundup/scores: Newton South’s Sakakeeny captures state Nordic title

Newton South’s Liam Sakakeeny captured the MIAA State Boys Nordic skiing title in helping his team capture the team championship.

Sakakeeny won in a time of 18:49, followed by Mount Greylock’s Quinn McDermott (18:59), Arlington’s Mori Finlayson-Johnecheck (19:17), Newton South’s Ian Brenner (19:23) and Mount Greylock’s Ollie Swabey (19:24).

In the MIAA State Girls Nordic skiing championship, Alexandria Taylor of Lincoln-Sudbury took first in a time of 21:47. Brookline’s Hannah Petersen finished second (22:40) with Concord-Carlisle’s Sarah Kirincich rounding out the top three in a time of 22:43. Mount Greylock won the team title with 70 points.

Boys basketball

Davis Darnell scored 29 points for Dedham in a 66-65 Tri-Valley League win over Bellingham. … Mason Melchionda (25 points) and Jono Windle (11 points) set the tone for Dover-Sherborn, which won a share of the TVL Small title (along with Medway) in a 53-48 victory over Norton. … Pete Kumar (24 points), Luke Lisciandra (20 points) and Rowan Tracey (17 points) led the way for Medfield in an 82-66 win over Norwood. For Norwood, Matty Mahoney scored his 1,000 point.

William Morman III put up 26 points, including six three-pointers, as St. Mark’s edged Nobles 59-56 in Independent School League action. … Marquis White (14 points), Lenny Tangishaka (12 points), and Mari Antoine (10 points) recorded double-digit scoring performances for Thayer in a 69-56 win over BB&N.

Wayland’s Grant Larsen (15 points) made two key foul shots with 11 seconds remaining to secure a 50-47 Dual County League over Weston. Ido Geffen had 13 points for the Warriors.

Christian Dalton collected 24 points, six assists and five steals, while Jonathon Theresias chipped in with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Marvens Laplante had 10 points and four steals as New Heights pulled away for a 78-50 MCSAO quarterfinal win over Excel Academy.

Caleb Baker and Isaiah Bean-Brittian netted 16 points each, with Jason Paretchan (12 points), Dylan Perrault (12 points) and Jack Williams (11 points) finishing in double digits also as Whitman-Hanson (14-5) rolled to an 89-57 Patriot League win over North Quincy. …  Jeremy Leonard poured in 24 points, and Nick Naujalis added 10 points as Silver Lake edged Quincy, 44-43.

Nick Barnes dropped 27 points and dished six assists, and Harry Miles had nine points as St. John’s (Shrewsbury) beat Algonquin 61-38 in a nonleague contest. … Tyler Staiti had 23 points and five assists while Kingston Maxwell added 20 points as Abington (14-5) beat Oliver Ames 69-63 in the Don Byron Memorial Classic. … Jason Kamau (15 points), Xavier Rivera (13 points, seven rebounds), Juan Beltres Diaz (eight points, 17 rebounds) and Tzar Powell-Aparicio (10 points) stood out for Lowell in a 58-55 win over St. John’s Prep.

Ryan Corcoran (13 points), Joseph Vella (12 points), Jamason Vella (22 points) and Jimmy Farrell (17 points) finished in double digits in scoring for Masconomet (10-8) in a 71-58 Northeastern Conference win over Danvers. … Anthony Forte (23 points, six rebounds, four assists) and Raphel Laurent (16 points, four assists, three rebounds, two blocks) powered Peabody (18-2) in a 68-27 win over Saugus.

Matt Breen dropped 30 points as Shawsheen (12-6) rolled to a 67-47 win over Whitter in Commonwealth Athletic Conference action.

Girls basketball

Izzy Barr (five steals, four rebounds) and Riley Spur (five points, four rebounds) boosted Sandwich (17-1) in a 42-28 nonleague win over O’Bryant.

Mackay Brooks tallied 10 points, while Ella Arntsen scored eight points and Lily Oliver and Phileine de Widt finished with six points each as Manchester Essex (13-5) defeated Ipswich 40-38 in the Cape Ann League. … Amelia Crowe (17 points) and Gabby Bellacqua (10 points) guided Pentucket (17-1) during a 37-33 win over North Reading.

Alyssa Adams registered 11 points for Tewksbury in a 57-40 Merrimack Valley Conference win over Lawrence. … Kerri Finneran (12 points), Sam Guertin (11 points, three triples), and Shaelagh Green (10 points) recorded double-digit scoring performances, and Abbey Dick added eight points as Central Catholic (15-3) bested North Andover, 47-20.

Cecilia Kay put in another excellent performance with 27 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks, and Bella Lopez-Marin finished with 10 points and three assists as Bishop Fenwick (15-3) beat St. Mary’s (Lynn) 57-49 in Catholic Central League action.

Hannah Kuriscak buried seven three-pointers and 22 total points, while Addison Taylor (14 points, seven assists, two steals) and CC Levrault (12 points, six rebounds, seven steals) broke into double figures in the scorebook as well as Apponequet (17-3) won the South Coast Conference title with a 65-29 victory over Old Rochester. … Mia Gentile (24 points, seven three-pointers), Karlie Cosme (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Makenzie Pires (13 points) paced Somerset Berkley (10-9) in a 68-39 win over Seekonk.

Jenna Mishou (18 points, 11 rebounds) set the tone for Whitman-Hanson (14-3), which clinched the Patriot League title with a 45-42 victory on the road against North Quincy.

Boys hockey

Nathan Hackett, Ryan Conway and Colin Blake scored, and Kyle Ready earned the shutout as Pembroke (10-5-3) clinched a spot in the MIAA Div. 3 tournament with a 3-0 Patriot League win over Quincy. … Brady Walsh and Chris Gillis hit the back of the net, and Anthony Rabeni made 14 saves as Duxbury punched its ticket to Div. 2 postseason play with a 2-1 win over Plymouth North. … Domenic Visocchi and Zakk Spano got the goals, and Nick Zaccaria made 15 saves to seal his second shutout for Whitman-Hanson in a 2-0 win over Silver Lake.

Will Manchuso found the net three times, and Sam Griswold (24 saves) got his first shutout for Concord-Carlisle in a 5-0 Dual County League victory over Bedford.

James Hayward struck for two goals, and goaltender Colton Spavento shone between the sticks as Hopkinton won the Tri-Valley League Large with a 2-1 victory over Norwood.

Caleb Kean (two goals, assist), Luca Finton (goal) and Ryan Burgess (goal), Dom Bonito (goal, three assists) and Ty Kelley (goal, two assists) lit the lamp for Bourne (13-4-1) in a 6-2 nonleague win over Dennis-Yarmouth.

Girls hockey

In nonleague action, Bella Freitas had a hat trick and Audrey Zimck scored twice as St. Mary’s of Lynn (17-1-1) routed Newburyport 10-1. … Kelly Holmes netted two goals and supplied an assist, while Annabelle Curran notched a hat trick and an assist and Kiki Lynch (20 saves) secured the shutout as King Philip routed Wayland/Weston, 7-0.

Chloe Goldberg scored the lone goal and Claire Zhang had the shutout in net as Winchester edged Lexington 1-0 in Middlesex League play.
