MIAA volleyball meeting: Committee votes unanimously to accept tournament format
There was little drama at Wednesday’s MIAA volleyball committee meeting as the nine voting members voted unanimously to accept the tournament format for the spring.
The only adjustment was language which specified seating capacity. For preliminary round, first and second round games, host schools had to have a minimum capacity of 250. In state quarterfinal games, the number increases to 500 before the final two rounds head to neutral facilities.
Other topics which came in the hour-long meeting was the use of electronic scoring. It was recommended that schools which use the device should have a backup readily available should something go haywire.
A subject which has come up as a potential concern in other sports in using kids to score contests. While some would prefer adults at the table during the tournament, Winchester athletic director Marc Arria felt otherwise.
“Kids have been doing it all year,” Arria said. “In many cases, they would be better than the adults, since many of them haven’t done it.”
The talk of hiring an official to score the match didn’t go far. As some astutely pointed out, there is a shortage as is and those who are officiating would probably make more money by actually doing a match.
