Twins trade Nick Gordon to Miami for reliever Steven Okert

The Twins and Marlins swapped a pair of players who are out of options on Sunday, with the Twins shipping utility player Nick Gordon to Miami and the Marlins sending back left-handed reliever Steven Okert.

The move does not come as a surprise considering Gordon, who lost a salary arbitration case over the weekend, faced an uphill battle to make the Twins’ roster. Gordon, whom the Twins drafted fifth overall in 2014, debuted in 2021 and carved out a role for himself the next season, hitting .272 and posting a 111 OPS + (100 is league average) while moving between the infield and outfield.

But his 2023 season was wrecked by injury. On May 17 against the Dodgers, Gordon fouled a pitch off his right leg and fractured his right tibia. While Gordon, 28, was relegated to watching from the bench, he was often lauded as a great teammate and hypeman. But he had been passed on the depth chart by Willi Castro, and a role for him on this year’s roster was not clear.

Instead, the Twins have grabbed Okert, 32, who serves as a potential option if they choose to carry another left-hander alongside Caleb Thielbar in the bullpen. Rookie Kody Funderburk is also in the mix.

Okert had a 3.51 earned-run average in three seasons in Miami, though that number was 4.45 in 64 games last season. He struck out 11.2 batters per nine innings last season, fanning 73 hitters in 58 2/3 innings.

The Twins, who did not acquire a single major league reliever last offseason, have now added Okert, Justin Topa, Josh Staumont and Jay Jackson this offseason. Their bullpen is projected to be among the best in the majors this upcoming season, per FanGraphs.

After signing Jackson and first baseman Carlos Santana earlier in the week, president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said the Twins would continue to seek ways to impact the roster even into spring training — pitchers and catchers report to Fort Myers, Fla., on Wednesday — with conversations centering around outfielders and some pitching.
