“Given the reported display of a firearm, the public is strongly urged to exercise caution if encountering individuals matching these descriptions and to promptly report any relevant information to law enforcement authorities,” the Boston Police Department said.

Man found guilty of first-degree murder

A Suffolk County jury found a 37-year-old man guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Nelio Barbosa of Malden in August 2019, prosecutors said this week.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said Carlos Lemon was also convicted of carrying a firearm without a license and carrying a loaded firearm without a license. Hayden said the “extraordinary act of violence” not only took Barbosa’s life but placed others in danger.

“I thank the witnesses who came forward, the investigators and prosecutors who worked on the case, and especially the jury for returning a just verdict,” he said in a statement.

Prosecutors said Lemon and Barbosa were both driving around on North Shore Road in Revere when video surveillance showed two shots were fired into Lemon’s car.

“Based on ballistic evidence it is apparent that it was shot from the motor vehicle next to the victim’s passenger side, distant video surveillance demonstrates the defendant’s vehicle pull up next to the victim’s car on the passenger side. Video and witness testimony, place the defendant as the sole occupant of the vehicle, driving at the time of the shooting,” prosecutors said.

Lexington doctor convicted of importing illegal, misbranded drugs

A 66-year-old Lexington doctor was convicted Friday of international money laundering and importing a non-approved drug typically used to treat alcohol and opioid dependence, federal prosecutors said.

A U.S. District Court judge scheduled sentencing for Rahim Shafa on May 15 after he was found guilty to international money laundering, illegally importing merchandise contrary to the law, and receiving and delivering misbranded drugs, prosecutors said.

Shafa purchased non-FDA approved naltrexone pellet implants and disulfiram pellet implants and injections from Hong Kong, prosecutors said. He falsified shipping documents to conceal the packages.

“Shafa sold these drugs to patients of Novel and implanted them into patients bodies, without fully understanding the risks of the drugs. Patients testified at trial regarding infections and complications they experienced from the pellet implantation procedure,” prosecutors said.
