Energized by sellout crowd, Burke nips Charlestown, 68-65
DORCHESTER – In a matchup that went wire to wire for the second time in two weeks, Burke used a soldout crowd and the return of its point guard to steal a share of the Boston City League South boys basketball title.
Junior Jasaad Fenton hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with under three minutes remaining as the No. 12 Bulldogs survived No. 5 Charlestown, 68-65, at Burke High on Thursday.
“The way we practice, a lot of people would not be able to survive what we do in practice,” said Burke coach Joe Chatman about the mental toughness of a game that had nine ties and 14 lead changes. “We try to make practice more competitive than games, so that’s why when we’re in those environments we perform the way we do.”
Senior Jaeshawn Rogers scored the final four points to seal the victory for Burke (13-3, 7-1) and played hard throughout as he led the team with 18 points and stepped up when junior Jaeden Roberts (16 points) sat out most of the second half.
“As a team, we saw one of our best scorers go down early in the third. We lost our big man early in the fourth and it didn’t change anything,” Rogers said about the team’s ability to get going in the fourth trailing 49-46. “We still stayed poised.”
With the team’s depth tested as junior Gerald Banks fouled out midway through the fourth, senior Demani Williams and senior Denilson Fanfan came up with huge buckets down the stretch off the bench.
“The biggest thing for us on that is that we teach that everybody has an opportunity to play,” said Chatman about the team’s depth. “Everybody knows what my job as a coach was when I came here and it was to empower everybody.”
Charlestown (13-2, 7-1) did not falter after falling down as many as seven in the third quarter as the teams traded nine of their 14 lead changes in the second half with five of those coming in the third. The Townies led as much as five in the second quarter as the teams were tied 14-14 after one and 25-25 at the half.
Sophomore Jaylen Hunter-Coleman led all scorers with 28 for Charlestown as he knocked down five triples, with three of those coming in the first half.
Next up, the Bulldogs will head to Massasoit Community College to face Dennis Yarmouth on Sunday at 5 p.m. Charlestown will face Brookline on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
