Girl, 2, released from hospital after St. Paul fire killed 4 of her siblings, critically injured her mother

A 2-year-old girl is out of the hospital after a fire in her family’s St. Paul home killed four of her siblings, her father said in a Thursday update.

Pa Cheng Vang’s 6-year-old son and his wife remain hospitalized.

The early morning Jan. 3 fire on Arkwright Street, near Maryland Avenue, was likely caused by an unattended candle, the fire department said previously. Firefighters pulled Ker Lor and her six children out of their home. Four children — an 18-month-old boy, a 4-year-old boy and twin 5-year-old girls — died soon after at the hospital.

Vang, who’d been at work when the fire started, wrote on GoFundMe Thursday that Regions Hospital did their best to get his 2-year-old daughter up and moving again. He wrote that he’s grateful to “at least have one bright star shine on my shadow.”

Vang’s son is now out of the intensive care unit, and he’s able to open his eyes and move a bit. But Vang wrote that he’s “very worried” because there has been damage to parts of the brain that control and communicate with his body.

Lor has been transferred to a different hospital. It’s been nearly a month since the fire and she still hasn’t been able to move her body, Vang wrote. He said she’s sometimes able to open her eyes. He added he’s praying that God hears “all the love” and prayers “of everyone and will help her recovery soon.”

People had donated nearly $500,000 at gofundme.com/f/siv-ntshiab as of Thursday, and Vang wrote that fundraising would be closed down after funerals next week.
