V Engineering Unveils New Hybrid Battery for the McLaren P1

V Engineering has announced Project Continuum, a new high-voltage battery programme designed to extend the life and improve the usability of the McLaren P1.

The Berkshire-based independent McLaren engineering specialist developed the system as an alternative to ageing factory batteries. Customer installations are scheduled to begin in spring 2027, with interest already coming from owners across several global markets.

A New Battery for an Iconic McLaren

V Engineering, part of the V Group, was established in 2021. The company specialises in servicing and supporting current and historic McLaren Automotive models.

Now, Project Continuum targets one of McLaren’s most significant cars.

The McLaren P1 first appeared as a concept at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. It then made its production debut at the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show. Production ran from October 2013 until December 2015.

However, the P1’s original battery technology is now showing its age.

The first battery cells used in the car were manufactured in 2010. Consequently, some units have spent around 16 years in service. Cell deterioration can eventually leave affected P1s unable to drive.

Project Continuum aims to offer owners a modern alternative while maintaining compatibility with the car’s existing systems.

More Energy, Less Weight

V Engineering has focused on increasing energy capacity while reducing weight.

The new battery stores 12.4kWh, compared with just 4.72kWh in the original P1 unit. That represents a substantial increase in available energy.

The additional capacity also has practical benefits on the road and track. The P1 uses its electric motor frequently to provide extra torque and reduce turbo lag. Therefore, the larger battery can support longer periods of electric assistance before requiring a recharge.

The new unit also removes 23kg of weight from the car.

For a performance-focused machine such as the P1, reducing mass while adding usable energy makes a compelling combination.

Formula E Technology Meets Plug-and-Play Design

V Engineering developed Project Continuum alongside engineers who worked on the original McLaren P1 programme.

The battery uses a glycol-based cooling system designed to improve heat management. At its heart sits a high-performance 21700 lithium battery module engineered to meet FIA Formula E requirements.

However, V Engineering has focused on making the technology straightforward for P1 owners.

The company describes the system as a plug-and-play solution, allowing it to work with the car’s existing electrical architecture.

A Long-Term Solution for P1 Owners

The company says the project responds to growing demand from P1 owners looking for a long-term solution for their cars. Moreover, maintaining the ability to use these complex hypercars could help protect their desirability and value.

Customer installations will begin in spring 2027. V Engineering is already discussing the programme with owners in the UK and Europe, the Middle East and the United States.

The project could therefore become an important step in keeping the P1 on the road as its original components continue to age.

What Does Project Continuum Mean for the McLaren P1?

The McLaren P1 remains one of the defining hybrid hypercars of its era. Yet even exceptional cars eventually face the challenge of ageing technology.

Project Continuum tackles that issue with a battery that offers more energy, less weight and improved cooling. Crucially, it also aims to preserve the P1’s original character rather than fundamentally change how the car operates.
