‘Waddle Into Action’ for African penguins at Como Park Zoo & Conservatory
The 10 African penguins of Como Zoo will be celebrated this weekend in a free, family-friendly event that will also highlight the global conservation efforts to protect this critically endangered species.
“Waddle Into Action” will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Activities include penguin feedings, crafts, interactive art installations, games and educational talks led by Como’s animal care staff.
The event’s goal, beyond celebrating the St. Paul penguins — Chicory, Skua, Munchkin, Neptune, Joshua, B.J., Amahle, Casey, Boo and Vern — is to raise awareness about the threats facing African penguins and to inspire visitors to take conservation action. Threats that African penguins face in the wild include climate change and shifting food availability, the zoo reports.

During this event, which is “powered” by Xcel Energy, Como Park Zoo & Conservatory will also host a community food and supply drive. Donations, which will be accepted between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, support Neighborhood House.
