Battenfeld: Seth Moulton scores major migrant PR coup in Senate campaign
In the latest installment of Democrats using immigrants as props, U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton – in an obvious bid to bolster his flailing Senate campaign – has scored a publicity coup, getting former teen detainee Marcelo Gomes da Silva to be his guest at the State of the Union.
Senate incumbent Ed Markey will now have to scramble to one-up Moulton’s cagey move.
Maybe he can get another photo op with Rumeysa Ozturk.
It would at least be his second appearance with the Tufts University student detained by ICE last year because of her pro-Hamas editorial.
Or maybe Markey can come hand in hand with Trump nemesis, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. Now that would cause a huge stir that would make Moulton jealous.
Moulton, who has never refused an invitation to get in front of a camera, is the latest to shamelessly exploit migrants to score political points against President Donald Trump and ICE.
Gomes da Silva has become an immigrant celebrity since he was detained and arrested by ICE in Milford, Massachusetts.
Democrats like Moulton and Gov. Maura Healey have turned Gomes da Silva – or as supporters call him “Marcelo” – into the unofficial party mascot, parading him in front of the only too willing media over the past few months.
Healey gave him a private tour of the Statehouse – with a Boston Globe reporter and a taxpayer-funded Healey photographer along to transcribe the major news story – and handed over to the teenager a rosary she said was blessed by the Pope. It was a major PR coup by Healey, who is up for reelection this year.
Now Moulton, who faces an uphill battle against Markey in a war between two far-left Democrats, is following suit with his State of the Union invite.
“The outpouring of support that Marcelo received following his detainment wasn’t an accident. It happened because people know the kind of person that Marcelo is. He is exactly the kind of young person America should be investing in, not locking up,” Moulton said in a statement. “If we want to call ourselves a nation of opportunity, we should start by uplifting young people like Marcelo.”
Moulton even included a handy statement from Gomes da Silva, surely not written by the 6th District congressman’s staff.
“I’m proud to represent the strength, faith and hard work of my community. Thank you to Seth for this invite,” he said.
Top that one, Ed.
Gomes da Silva’s appearance at the Feb. 24 State of the Union is just the latest Moulton ploy to gain attention for his campaign.
He has toured the ICE detainment center in Burlington and went to Minnesota earlier this month because he wanted to stand with “great American patriots” who were protesting ICE’s infiltration into the state.
Moulton used the appearance to call for the abolition of ICE, the prosecution of ICE agents who violate the law and warn that the agency will be coming for Massachusetts next.
“Sadly, this is a reality,” he told the Bedford Citizen. “They clearly have our blue states in their sights.”
Markey has also been shameless in letting voters know about his visit to Ozturk where she was held in Louisiana, flying there himself and posting Instagram reels along the way.
