BC High bests Needham in battle of Div. 1 contenders

When the regular season is nearing its conclusion, a win over a seasoned heavyweight can be just the recipe for a prolonged playoff run.

Facing another state titan Thursday, BC High’s boys basketball squad showed its resilience again. Sophomore Owen Adams dropped in 20 points, while senior Jacob Seyfried finished with 17 points as the Eagles (13-5) stormed back from an early 10-point deficit to topple Needham, 63-51.

“I think our team energy was the big thing about it,” Seyfried said. “We were down early in the first quarter, but the team stayed together. That’s been our motto for the entire season: staying together. That’s what propelled us to win this game.”

The Rockets (16-2) got off to a hot start, fueled by Foster Wilinski and Ben Marino. The duo consistently finished difficult shots in the opening frame, providing Needham a 13-5 edge through one quarter.

Momentum carried into the second stanza for the Rockets, as Andrew Chen finished a nifty layup in traffic to give Needham a comfortable 19-9 lead.

After lying dormant in the game’s early stages, however, BC High came to life shortly thereafter with Adams leading the charge. Suddenly, the Eagles began to chip away.

“We missed our first five shots of the game,” Adams said. “We didn’t let that get in our heads. We kept going. We kept shooting, we kept getting to the rim, and that’s how we got back on them.”

As the final seconds bled away in the half, Adams drove toward the rim, and saw his lane cut short. The sophomore was forced to take a wild shot from behind the backboard, and somehow connected as the Eagles trimmed their deficit to 26-21 at intermission.

“That game was a seven-point game,” Adams said. “It brought it to five, and brought it closer at the half.”

Adams drilled a three-pointer to kickstart the third quarter, and the Eagles were off and running. Moments later, Charlie Anzenberger sank a contested layup through contact, as BC High seized its first lead at 28-26 with just under six minutes left in the frame.

The teams traded buckets until the start of the fourth quarter, with BC High clinging to a 40-39 lead. Then Seyfried seized the reins and propelled his team to victory.

Playing in front of a packed house on senior night, the guard buried three consecutive triples. The final attempt proved to be the dagger, as Seyfried sent Eagles fans into a frenzy after giving his team a commanding 54-43 lead with 4:45 left in regulation.

“You’ve just got to keep shooting,” said Seyfried. “Even if you’re missing. I was missing shots in the first half, but I just know that I’ve got to keep shooting. My teammates have trust in me. My coaches have trust in me, so that’s just what I do.”

BC High slammed the door shut after that, out-scoring the Rockets with a 9-4 run to close things out. Wilinski registered a double-double for Needham, finishing with a game-high 21 points to go with 11 rebounds.

After knocking off another one of the Commonwealth’s top-ranked programs, the Eagles will look to enter the Div. 1 tournament with authority.

“(We’re going to approach it) just the same way we’ve been doing,” Adams said. “Keep working in practice, keep getting shots up, and that will carry us through.”
