Fire destroys Lynn home, displaces 14 people
Fourteen people were displaced after a quick-moving second-alarm fire tore through a triple-decker home in Lynn Monday evening.
The fire began around 4:30 p.m. at 49 Burrill Ave. in East Lynn, and raged for several hours in frigid temperatures, Lynn fire officials said.
The fire had “possession of the third floor” quickly after it began, with flames shooting through the roof of the building, the Lynn Fire Department posted on social media. It was initially reported as a “porch fire with heavy fire showing.” There were no injuries.
Crews were seen working to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes in the dense residential neighborhood.
Mateo Velez, 30, said his family lives in the home that caught fire. He said his sister, her four children, including his five-month-old niece, and her husband, were home at the time on the first floor when the fire broke out.
“They saw the smoke and then they ran out,” Velez said.
Velez said his father and mother, who live on the third floor, were not home at the time. His father was at work, and his mother was not aware of what was happening until she got home from work, and “everything was in flames.”
Another family, his sister’s in-laws, lives on the second floor, he said. Two of the people were at home and able to get out safely. The rest of the family is on vacation, Velez said.
Velez said he moved out of the home last year. His family was in the process of making temporary living arrangements, he said, adding that he would probably take his parents home with him for the time being.
“We’re trying to figure it out,” Velez said. “We lost the house, but not an actual family member, and that’s the most important thing.”
