Nora-Jane Noone follows the money in ‘Hidden Assets’

“Hidden Assets,” with its third season unfolding Monday nights on AcornTV, is an addictive Irish cops & robbers series inspired by real events.

Nora-Jane Noone stars as Detective Sergeant Claire Wallace, a key member of the Dublin-based, internationally focused Criminal Assets Bureau.

The six-episode season streams E4 this week with Wallace uncovering vicious reprisals in Bilbao, Spain’s sunny resort area.

“Because it’s international,” Noone, 41, said in a phone interview from her home in Galway, “it has an appeal across a number of countries and each season has the potential to be somewhere new and exciting.

“That’s because CAB follows the money, with all manner of people involved: Civilians who are forensic accountants go through people’s accounts with a fine tooth comb looking for traces of shell companies, embezzlement, all sorts of issues. Assets, houses, cars. People hiding money in plain sight. And in other countries, you also have investigators. You have beat cops. You have tech experts.

“A whole team of people looking for these clues to see if they can get the criminals through the accounts, not paying taxes or declaring income. Kind of like Al Capone” – the notorious 1930s Chicago crime czar who wound up behind bars in Alcatraz, not for his many murders but for cheating on his income tax.

The Criminal Assets Bureau, Noone noted, “is an interesting take on a police drama. It’s an angle that hasn’t been done before and there’s been a lot of real-life stories that have been in the press here in Ireland (I’m not so sure about the States). That makes it even more intriguing; you feel like you’re getting a peek behind these real-life situations that have been very much in the media.”

As for Noone’s Wallace, modeled on a real-life counterpart, “Her main struggle for the season is she’s so determined to prove that she can do her job, regardless of how difficult it can be.

“There’s something in her gut telling her, There’s more to this. She’s in Bilbao and her boss in Dublin is saying, ‘Slow down. Maybe you can’t handle this all on your own. Maybe you do need to step back.’

“He is willing to give her a little more rope. He believes in her. Which is nice to see, even though she’s testing his patience. And that was really interesting to play.”

As for how scenic Bilbao in Spain became such an integral part of S3 where CAB joins forces with Ertzaintza detectives?

“I think someone visited there and thought it would be interesting,” Noone said with a laugh. “It’s a beautiful place. Stunning. It’s this city in a valley, very lush and green. Very unique.

“So I can see how it sparked somebody’s imagination.”
