Seahawks edge rushers evaluate Patriots rookie Will Campbell ahead of Super Bowl

SAN JOSE — Rookie left tackle Will Campbell’s gauntlet of a postseason doesn’t get any easier in Super Bowl LX with the Patriots facing off against the Seahawks’ vaunted defense.

The Seahawks ranked third in total pressures and seventh in sacks this season, thanks to a front seven that includes a rotating set of outside linebackers in veterans DeMarcus Lawrence and Uchenna Nwosu and younger pass rushers Derick Hall and Boye Mafe.

“He’s young. He has a nice system. He’s very well-coached,” Lawrence said of Campbell.” He’s not here for no reason.”

Hall, who played at Auburn, faced off against the Patriots left tackle in 2022 when Campbell was a rookie. Hall had seven pressures, including a sack, in that game, but Campbell allowed just one hurry.

“Obviously, I’ve had an opportunity against him in college when he was at LSU. I know him a little bit,” Hall said. “A guy who’s really well coached. He does some things really well. He’s a short-armed guy, and I feel like, for him being a short-armed guy, you really don’t see that on tape. He does things well. He plays the run really well. He’s a well coached guy, I can tell, still, from the from the college level, but he does things really well. He pass sets really well.

“There’s some things that, obviously, we could see on our side of the ball, and maybe have some opportunities there, but overall I think he’s a really good player.”

Lawtence, Hall, Nwosu and Mafe all play a pretty even share of snaps. Lawrence (698 defensive snaps) led the way ahead of Nwosu (640 snaps), Mafe (606 snaps) and Hall (477 snaps).

“Will, he’s a young guy coming into this. It’s his first year. So one of the situations is, you got to understand that, and you got to go there, and there’s certain things that you got to be ready for and how to attack it,” Mafe said. “And he’s done a good job. The guy’s in a Super Bowl. So that’s a testament to them. Going out there on Sunday, got to play a defense like us.”

Campbell allowed a QB hit and hurry in the Patriots’ last game, their AFC Championship Game win over the Broncos. He struggled against the Texans (two sacks, two hurries) and Chargers (sack, four hurries), however.

“He’s a great player, man,” Nwosu said. “He’s a really good player. He was drafted high for a reason. He does a lot of good things well. It’s gonna be a tough challenge for us up front.”
