Interstate 94 east of downtown St. Paul to close for the weekend — for real this time

Following back-to-back weather delays, the twice-delayed closure of Interstate 94 east of downtown St. Paul has been rescheduled for this weekend, when work crews hope to take advantage of balmier temperatures to set beams for the new Kellogg Blvd/Third Street bridge.

The weekend closure will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and is expected to run until 5 p.m. Sunday. Both directions of I-94 will close between U.S. 61 and U.S. 52/Lafayette Freeway.

Access to local streets, including Etna Street and Wilson Avenue, from I-94 will be blocked and all westbound I-94 traffic will be routed southbound on U.S. 61. The exits to Burns Avenue will be closed to reduce cut-through traffic on local streets.

To access downtown from the east metro, take U.S. 61 south to Warner/Shepard Road. To access east side streets from the east metro, exit on White Bear Avenue.

St. Paul construction crews will deliver and set beams this weekend for the bridge project, which began in July 2024. The $91 million bridge replacement is expected to be complete in the fall of 2027.
