California woman accused of beheading boyfriend arrested in Mexico, returned to U.S.
A California woman accused of killing and decapitating her boyfriend was arrested in Mexico last week and returned to the U.S. to face charges of murder, authorities announced Thursday.
Alyssa Marie Lira, 23, has been charged with one felony count of murder and one felony enhancement of personally using a weapon, according to Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer.
The charges come five months after the headless body of Lira’s boyfriend, 55-year-old Enrique Gonzalez-Carbajal, was found in her Anaheim home. The two had only been dating for about two months at the time of his murder, according to police.
No other details in the gruesome slaying or a motive have been made public.
“During the course of the investigation, Anaheim homicide detectives identified Lira as a suspect and determined that she had immediately fled to Mexico after the murder,” prosecutors said.
Lira, who had been on the run ever since, was taken into custody on Jan. 22 after a months-long search by both American and Mexican law enforcement. Authorities did not provide further details on how or where she was captured.
Lira was extradited back to the California and is currently being held at the Orange County Jail without bail. She’s scheduled to be arraigned on Feb. 13.
If convicted on both charges, Lira faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in prison.
“Nothing, not time, not distance, nor foreign borders, will thwart our pursuit of justice, and Orange County law enforcement will continue to go the very ends of the earth to carry out our mission and hold criminals accountable for the heinous acts they commit,” Spitzer said. “This investigation and prosecution are a testament to the tenacity and the dedication of (local) federal and international partners to identify a cold-blooded killer, track her down in a foreign country, and bring her back to the United States to face the full weight of the law.”
