Police Blotter: Boston EMS warns caution while removing snow
As of Monday, Boston Emergency Services had not seen any cardiac-related 911 calls associated with clearing snow from the weekend’s storm.
“That said, the cleanup is just getting underway, and we want to remind residents to take it slow,” said Boston EMS’s Director of Media and Public Relations Caitlin McLaughlin.
“Snow removal is strenuous,” she noted, and anyone who feels chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness or nausea when clearing snow should stop and call 911 immediately.
She also warned against placing hands inside of a snowblower, “even if it’s clogged.”
“If you’re able, check in on neighbors who may need assistance,” she added.
Three-alarm fire erupts in Winthrop
Winthrop Fire Department responded to a three alarm early Monday morning amid heavy snow fall.
Firefighters arrived at 51 Somerset Avenue around 1:20 a.m. and saw that a single family home was “fully involved in fire,” according to Fire Chief Stephen Calandra.
The five people who lived in the building evacuated before firefighters arrived and no injuries were reported.
It took Winthrop Fire about three and a half hours to put the fire out and crews had to dig several hydrants out of the snow in the process.
Massport and fire departments from Chelsea, Everett, Revere, and Boston provided mutual aid.
“These were extremely challenging conditions, and I am grateful for the work of our crews and mutual aid partners in handling the incident while making sure everyone was safe and protected,” Calandra said in a statement. “This was our second multi-alarm fire in three days, and we are grateful to have our mutual aid help take some of the burden off of our crews, especially in windy and snowy conditions that can be harmful in prolonged exposure.”
