St. Paul police temporarily using only marked squads for traffic stops
St. Paul police will temporarily only use marked vehicles for routine traffic stops because of ongoing immigration enforcement in the community, the department announced Friday.
“To help reassure our community and provide clarity around interactions with the St. Paul Police Department, we want visitors and residents to know for certain when a St. Paul police officer is stopping them,” said Alyssa Arcand, a department spokesman.
Federal officers have been using unmarked vehicles in the recent immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota.
Marked St. Paul police vehicles include traditional black and white squads and traffic squads with a SPPD badge on the passenger door.
“Remember: Any suspicious, dangerous, or unlawful activity should be reported to us immediately so that we can respond,” the police department posted on social media Friday. “When in doubt, call 911.”
