Boston lines up activities in honor of MLK Day
Numerous groups and residents across Massachusetts are set to gather Monday for a host of Martin Luther King Day activities in honor of the civil rights leader’s legacy.
At 8 a.m. Monday, events will commence with the annual community breakfast at Quinsigamond Community College and Assumption University. The breakfast will feature keynote speaker Jennifer Carey, former executive director of the Worcester Education Collaborative, and remarks from Rep. Jim McGovern.
At 9 a.m., the 56th annual Martin Luther King Jr. memorial breakfast will kick off in Boston. The event, focused on King’s legacy and the importance of his teachings today, will feature keynote speaker Pulitzer Prize winner Nikole Hannah-Jones and remarks from Attorney General Andrea Campbell and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu at the Westin Copley Place hotel and includes a livestream.
At noon, the King Day Celebration will begin at Boston University’s Metcalf Hall.
The celebration centers around the theme of “Justice Indivisible: Fighting Racism, Greed and War,” inspired by King’s 1967 Three Evils of Society speech, which names racism, poverty and militarism as threats to American democracy, organizers state.
The Boston University program will feature keynote speaker Dr. Eve Ewing, associate professor at the University of Chicago and author, and remarks from Mayor Wu.
During the day, Boston Cares will continue a traditional day of service at Boston Latin School, with ongoing volunteer projects as well as virtual sessions to learn about nonprofit partners and community issues.
Museums and institution including the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Institute of Contemporary Art, Peabody Essex Museum, JFK Library and more are also offering free admission and exhibitions in honor of the holiday throughout Monday.
