Patriots rookie Will Campbell doesn’t care what you have to say on social media

FOXBORO — Patriots rookie left tackle Will Campbell was battle-tested as a freshman at LSU.

Campbell recalled this week that as an 18-year-old freshman in college, he was tasked to block future NFL pass-rush superstars Will Anderson, Jared Verse and Jalen Carter.

He could have kept listing them, because Campbell played against a litany of other future NFL players that season. But Anderson came up this week because Campbell will face him again Sunday when the Patriots play the Texans in the divisional round of the playoffs.

“It’s a great experience for a young player,” Campbell said. “I had a feeling one day I would get to see him again. He’s an extremely talented player. Plays the game really hard. Ton of respect for him and what he’s been able to do.”

Campbell received high marks from PFF for his run blocking but allowed one sack and four hurries in the passing game.

He was asked what he thinks about what his critics have to say.

“Honesty, I don’t give a (expletive) what anyone says, to be honest with you,” Campbell said. “It’s easy to type behind a Twitter account that, you know, is fake. I hold myself to the highest expectation of anybody. I want to be perfect.”

Campbell was realistic about his performance in the Patriots’ 16-3 win over the Chargers while going up against Tuli Tuipulotu, Odafe Oweh, Khalil Mack and the rest of LA’s defensive front.

“Obviously, I didn’t pitch a shutout,” Campbell said. “I had two or three plays that I wish I could have back. But that’s $300 million in defensive ends and I’ve got a ton of respect for those dudes. It’s going to be like that every week in the playoffs.

“Like coach (Mike) Vrabel said. You’ve got to be willing to spill a little blood in violence. You’ve got to just hope you don’t spill more than they do. And that’s the name of the game.”

Opposite Anderson, Campbell will also have to block Texans five-time Pro Bowler Danielle Hunter, who had 15 sacks this season. It was the seventh double-digit sack season of his 10-year career.
