Greater Boston pizzeria booming after surprise visit from Dave Portnoy, Ann Michael Maye

Business is booming at a Greater Boston pizzeria after it received a shocking visit for a pizza review from Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy and the “Queen of the North,” Ann Michael Maye.

All of it has come as a surprise to the owner of Gianni’s Deli and Pizza in Needham, who says she did not know who her guests were before Portnoy and the wife of Patriots quarterback Drake Maye stopped by last week, ahead of Sunday’s Wild Card game at Gillette Stadium.

“We are so surprised and happy to have been visited by these wonderful people,” the shop stated on Facebook on Friday.

Portnoy and Ann Michael Maye, who has gained fame amongst Patriots fans for her viral “Bakemas” TikTok videos during the Christmas season, visited Gianni’s last Tuesday afternoon for the Barstool founder’s popular one-bite pizza reviews.

“The owners in there are very cute,” Portnoy said at the beginning of the video. “(For) 25 years, they’ve had this place. They had no clue who we were. And basically, they said the pizza’s so good we’re going to cry. It does look pretty good.”

Maye, a special guest for the review, tried a slice of cheese pizza from the Needham Heights business, going before Portnoy.

“It’s really good,” Maye said. “I think I’m going to give it an 8.1.”

That rating surprised Portnoy, who responded, “OK. That’s a monster score in my book.”

Maye countered, “I’m not a pizza reviewer, you know. I’m a baker. I think it’s good.”

Portnoy rated his slice a 7.7, which he said is a “pretty high score for me.”

A customer told Gianni’s co-owner Aida Rasla that getting a visit and pizza review from Portnoy is a “big deal,” to her surprise.

“It’s a big deal?” Rasla asked. The customer responded, “It’s a big deal,” to her delight. “Oh, thank you!” she said.

A humble Portnoy said that “it’s all relative,” and that Rasla’s pizza was “very good.”

“I don’t know you,” Rasla told Portnoy, with a smile on her face. “I’m so happy today! Thank you. I don’t know you guys.”

Gianni’s is seeing triple the number of their regular customers after Portnoy posted the video on Thursday, Rasla told the Needham Local on Friday. The hyperlocal news outlet reported that the shop’s phones were ringing “nonstop.”

Rasla said that Portnoy and Maye’s visit came at a critical moment as she’s been living in a “month-by-month rental situation,” after her home suffered severe water damage last year, the Needham Local reported.

“When you lose everything and something happens like that,” Rasla said, “it’s like, ‘thank you, God.’”

Rasla told Portnoy that she is a Patriots fan. Portnoy then pointed to Ann Michael Maye, saying, “So this is the wife of the quarterback,” fascinating Rasla.

“Oooo,” she responded. “I love the Patriots, I watch it all the time.”

Maye cheered, “Let’s go!”

At the end of the video, Portnoy described the business as a “great neighborhood sandwich pizza shop.” Maye agreed.

“The best part of the whole place is the lady,” Portnoy said. “When we do these reviews, shedding light on the local businesses and the people running it. Twenty-five years, from Egypt, her family (was) raised by Italians, got all the recipes. … Highly recommend coming in.”
