Mayor Wu inauguration to kick off celebration events Monday

Mayor Michelle Wu and Boston City Council members will be inaugurated in a livestreamed ceremony Monday morning, kicking off more celebratory events throughout the week.

“This series of events to ring in the new year and new term will bring together residents and families across our neighborhoods,” Wu said. “As we kick off the new year, these events and activations will create space for joy, belonging and celebration while elevating the community voices and partners who are shaping Boston’s present and future.”

The mayor and City Council members inauguration ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in Boston Symphony Hall on Monday and be livestreamed on the city’s website, followed by a week of programming across the city.

The weeklong inauguration event schedule is designed to “spark belonging and civic pride, highlight the vibrancy of Boston’s neighborhoods, elevate community voices and partners, and offer residents meaningful interaction with City services and leadership,” according to the city.

Wu encouraged “every resident to join in the celebrations and be a part of Boston’s next chapter.”

The programming began over the weekend with free skating events at Frog Pond and Dorchester’s Chez Vous Roller Rink and a Boston Family Days celebration at the program’s 14 of participating museums and cultural institutions. A second Family Days event will take place on Jan. 11.

Following the inauguration Monday, the city will launch a series of “Boston Reads: Make Way for Storytime!” events at Boston Public Library branches through the week. The storytime readings will feature the book “Make Way for Ducklings” and interactive activities.

On Tuesday, the city will host a “Morning of Hope: Gathering of Faith and Community” in Roxbury. The gathering will bring together “faith leaders, community safety partners, and City leadership to reflect, pray, and celebrate Boston as a safe, inclusive, and welcoming city for all” and include a speaking program.

On Wednesday, the mayor and Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Cabinet will host a “Rooted in Boston: Celebrating Neighborhood Businesses” event in East Boston. The event will focus on Boston’s small business and include grantees from the City’s Supporting Pandemic Affected Community Enterprises program and awardees of the city’s Legacy Business program.

On Thursday, the city will celebrate Boston’s older adults with a “Bloom Boston: A Floral Design Event for Seniors” event in the South end, run by the mayor and Age Strong Commission and led by Boston Flower Co. The program will center around a floral arrangement workshop experience.

On Friday, teen will join the Office of Youth Engagement and Advancement and mayor for “Teen Takeover: The Future of Boston” at BCYF Mattahunt in Mattapan. The event will welcome “youth input into the administration’s second-term priorities through an interactive visioning activity” and feature programming like games, art and a raffle drawing.
