Boston Police Blotter: 4 arrested in brutal MBTA Orange line attack

A Roxbury teen faces serious charges after authorities say he took part in a group beating of an MBTA Orange line train passenger.

Mannice Mitchner, 18, allegedly first recorded the assault by a group of juveniles on an 18-year-old male victim before he then decided to join in by kicking the victim in the head.

“This was a frightening experience for this young man and for all the riders who witnessed it. These arrests and prosecutions should serve as warnings to other potential transit offenders — surveillance cameras are in place throughout the system and you will be seen and caught,” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said.

Mitchner — already the subject of open cases in West Roxbury, Fall River, Roxbury, and Dorchester — now faces charges of unarmed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct on a public conveyance. Authorities say they reviewed MBTA security cameras and have so far also arrested three of the five original attackers.

Police say that seven teens boarded the Orange Line at Downtown Crossing station in Boston. Five of them then confronted the passenger, who later told investigators he didn’t know any of them, and then began punching him with closed fists. They then threw him to the ground and continued to punch and kick him. That’s when Mitchner, who was not a member of the initial group, allegedly landed his own kick.
