Boston Police Blotter: Missing package leads to alleged assault

A dispute over a package delivered to the wrong address a few days before Christmas spiraled into an assault, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Khalil Muhammad, 29, was charged with assault and battery on a person over 60 and unarmed robbery in Boston Municipal Court in Dorchester last week after an altercation with his neighbor.

Prosecutors alleged that Muhammad beat a 77-year-old neighbor after the victim approached Muhammad to ask him about a missing package.

When officers responded to a report of an assault in progress at 730 Cummins Highway on Dec. 22, they spoke to a witness who described the beating and said Muhammad stole the elderly neighbor’s phone.

They also spoke to Muhammad who said the man had accused him of stealing one of his packages.

Police found the victim “badly beaten with his eyes swollen shut, a bleeding cut under one eye, and unable to answer questions,” according to the DA. The elderly man was transported to the hospital and eventually able to talk to police, telling them that an Amazon package had been mistakenly delivered to Muhammad’s apartment.

When the victim approached Muhammad about it, Muhammad allegedly took the man’s cellphone and started beating him. When the man ran up the stairs back to his apartment, he told police Muhammad followed him and continued the assault.

“We take all assaults seriously, and the facts present here — an elderly victim suffering considerable injuries after being subjected to an extended attack — are particularly egregious. Escalating an incident of a mis-delivered package to such violence is intolerable,” Suffolk DA Kevin Hayden said in a statement.

According to the DA, Muhammad has a criminal history in both Massachusetts and New York, including an active East Boston case for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and possession of a Class B drug.

A judge in the East Boston case revoked Muhammad’s bail and ordered him to be detained for probation violations.

He is expected back in court on Jan. 22.
